Welcome to Marengo Academy!

Marengo Academy Longhorns

Once again, Marengo Academy has been selected as an Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Blue Ribbon school for 2009-2010! Each year the AISA awards a Blue Ribbon to schools that meet certain criteria to distinguish themselves. A Blue Ribbon school exemplifies excellence in teaching, student performance, school life, and school-community interaction. A Blue Ribbon school never is satisfied to receive this award; rather, the school is involved in an ongoing process of school improvement. At Marengo Academy, the school improvement process is a partnership between parents, students and student organizations, faculty, and administration working together to accomplish our mission.

The mission of Marengo Academy is to establish a lifelong learning foundation that is necessary for students to achieve their maximum potential and to lead fulfilling and productive lives. This foundation begins in the new daycare program and continues through twelfth grade. The cornerstone of this foundation is the promotion and support of Christian values. All functions, whether board meetings or ball games, begin with prayer.   While providing a well-rounded curriculum, the elementary grades target specific skills on which to build future academic successes.   Accelerated Reader programs develop reading and comprehension skills and allow students to utilize the elementary library.   The newly updated computer lab facilitates the development of computer skills, including power-point presentations developed by the fifth-grade class. Of course, math and science classes are emphasized, and students participating in the elementary art program consistently compete in school, district, and state shows. At the junior high level, these skills continue to be developed, and the math team recently had a huge success in the district competition!   Advanced and standard diploma courses of study are offered for senior high students. Both the junior and senior high students have access to the science lab, updated computer lab, and library. To further emphasize the values that MA supports, a “Character Development Class” is offered. Our qualified teachers strive to teach in an interactive manner. Small classes make one-to-one teacher-student interactions the norm rather than the exception. Our environment is safe, and respect for faculty and fellow students is obvious.

Marengo Academy is proud of our reputation as competitors on the athletic field. A tradition of winning has long been a part of MA. Longhorn teams have produced AISA State Champions in six sports throughout the years. These sports and the number of respective titles are football (7); cheerleading (7); baseball (5); softball (3); wrestling (2); and basketball (1). In addition to the varsity and junior high sports teams, MA offers pee-wee football and basketball teams for grades 3-6. The Booster Club is very supportive of all athletic teams. Can’t get to the football game this Friday night? Catch it on www.yourschoollive.com! You can even cheer in the “chat” section!

The MA family owes a special thanks to the Marengo Academy Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for sponsoring the school website (www.marengoacademy.org) and many other school projects. Thank you for your help! All parents are strongly encouraged to join the PTA.   At Marengo Academy, PTA really does mean “parents and teachers.”

Our Student Government Association is a very important student organization that sponsors community outreach projects in addition to its chartered role of student government. Some of the projects that they have sponsored include blood drives, Project Merry Christmas, Samaritan’s Purse, and coat drives.

Marengo Academy has a good relationship with the local newspapers. Activities at the school are submitted to the newspapers so that people in the surrounding communities are able to see the academic and athletic accomplishments of our students.

A few words from some members of the MA family are offered below.

“After over thirty years of teaching at Marengo Academy, there are many positive
things that I could say. Marengo Academy offers not only the required subjects, but
also a wide range of electives, extracurricular activities, and sports. To me personally,
what makes Marengo Academy special is the caring and supportive spirit among
faculty, administration, and student body. We are truly a family. This endearing quality
and the students themselves are the reasons I have remained at Marengo Academy.”
Mrs. Mary Olive Hasty, Math Teacher

“Marengo Academy was very instrumental in my being accepted into the college
of my choice. The nurturing experiences (academically, athletically, and socially) I
received as an M. A. student have influenced powerfully my success as a student at
Louisiana State University. I say that because not only did I receive a quality
education from a competent and caring faculty at Marengo, but the student leadership
opportunities I participated in helped to pave the way for my involvement as an
LSU Ambassador and Student Government Senator as well as the recipient of a
tuition scholarship. There is no doubt Marengo Academy has played an integral
role in my success as a college student.”
Jacob Harris, Salutatorian, Class of 2007

“There is no doubt in my mind that the caring teachers of Marengo Academy
molded me into the person I am today. They taught me how to become an
exceptional student while striving for the goals which I dream to achieve.

Marengo Academy was an outstanding experience for me. The teachers had a way
of presenting material at a level that all could relate to, and they helped you pinpoint
your weak areas and turn them into strengths.”
 Sydney Broadaway, Class of 2007
