History

Marengo Academy began as Marengo County Private School, incorporated under the laws of the State of Alabama on July 30, 1969, and has continued to serve the Blackbelt area since its inception.  The school was approved and selected for membership in the Alabama Association of Private Schools in October, 1969.  That year grades one through six were taught at the 604 E. Coats Avenue campus.  The building at 2103 South Main Street was completed during the summer of 1970, classes for grades seven through twelve then began.  By the time 45 seniors graduated on May 28, 1971, the school had become Marengo Academy.  Through the years, buildings have been added and programs expanded, but the basic purpose of offering an excellent education has remained constant.  Marengo Academy is committed to partnership between students, parents, teachers, and administrators to provide an education for students of average and above intelligence and for abilities that will empower them to succeed.  In its early years, Marengo Academy was one of the largest private school in the state of Alabama.  Over time, as with most rural areas, enrollemnt has dropped to its present size of 330 students, but it is projected that the school will experience a slow, steady increase in enrollemnt.
